How to Choose the Best Color Palette for your Home

Designing your home’s interior is one of the most important parts of making a house a home. You want every room to radiate your personal style and create the perfect atmosphere for your family. Before buying new furniture or artwork, chose a color palette for your room that will bring a smile to your face every time you walk in the door. Here are some ideas to help you design the perfect color scheme for your living space.

One place to start is with your favorite upholstery or painting. Pull out the main colors of your chosen piece to create the color palette of your space.  Use dominant colors to match furniture and accent pieces and neutral colors such as light gray and beige for the walls. This is a fool-proof way to know you will like the end result.

Pay attention to the strength of the colors in your room. Keep dark color values on the floor, and continue to lighten colors as they reach toward the ceiling. Doing the opposite, using dark colors toward the ceiling and leaving a light-colored floor, can make your room seem cramped and unnatural.

Don’t forget the basics! When choosing your palette, get out the color wheel and use a variety of combinations to come up with the perfect color scheme.  If you want your living space to have an energetic and confident feel, use warm colors such as shades of orange, yellow, and red. For an extra pop, add a complementary color (a color on the opposite side of the color wheel) as a statement. If you prefer to create a relaxing and calm space, choose cool colors such as shades of blue, green, and purple. Use a collection of colors next to each other on the color wheel to keep your room uniform and serene.

Black and white is always a classic. Design your room around shades of gray, and stay clear of color for an elegant and polished style. Remember to keep dark black toward the floor, gray for accent pieces, furniture, or the walls, and white toward the ceiling. If you decide you want color in your room, a black and grey foundation is a great way to make your color pop. Just add some colored pillows or a bright throw, and you’ll have a brand new room!
